Byron resident receives free two-year lease on new car

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – United Way and Rochester Motor Cars teamed up to give one lucky person a free two-year lease on a new car.

It’s part of United Way’s first Give United Drawing.

“We started the 2021 Give United Drawing as a way to create an additional reason and incentive for individuals to give in our community,” Olmsted County United Way President Jermone Ferson said.

The winner Jamie Urch of Byron has been driving her current vehicle since 2010.

“I currently have a Sienna minivan that has over 200,000 miles, and we were just talking about needing to change up,” Urch said.

When Urch opened up the email saying she won a lease on a car, she was in total shock. She didn’t even think the email was real.

“Once we realized that I got an email at home, an email at work and then my nurse manager called to me to say I have to call United Way,” Urch said.

There were two ways to enter the contest. Individuals could either make a monetary donation or submit a 100-word essay about why living in Olmsted County is the best place to live.

“Most all entries came in through the donations to United Way which is great because that helps our community get stronger,” Ferson said.

Urch donates to United Way every year, so she wasn’t even aware she entered the contest until she found out she won.

“I’ve also been an advocate for United Way on my unit, so definitely going to promote them even more now,” Urch said.

Urch says having the new car will help her stay connected with her family who lives outside of the area.

“My son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren are in the cities so I do a lot of back-and-forth. My daughter is in St. Louis. I drive to see her so it will be kind of amazing to have a new vehicle,” Urch said.

United Way members say being able to give back in this way makes their work that much more special.

“It’s just bringing it all together, and it’s always a beautiful thing to see, so in my position, I get to see it not just in this instance, but in many other instances where the community comes together to support individuals to reach their potential,” Ferson said.
