CHICO — Chico police are looking for a person who broke into and crashed into several cars at an apartment complex early Wednesday morning.
Police had responded to an apartment complex at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of East Shasta Avenue on a report of a vehicle burglary. According to a Chico Police Department press release, the officers who arrived on the scene tried to contact someone in a car who matched the description provided by the caller.
“The subject ignored officers and fled by driving through the parking lot,” the press release said. “As the suspect fled, his vehicle collided with three other vehicles and a community dumpster, disabling his vehicle.”
According to the press release, the person ran away from the scene and many officers had responded to assist, but the person was already out of the area. Officers learned the car that the person was driving had been reported stolen earlier this week, the press release said. Officers said a total of 10 cars were broken into.
Greg Gibson, a Chico resident, said the car that was stolen had belonged to him. Gibson said he had received a call around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday letting him know his car had been crashed.
“I went there to the salvage yard and grabbed out everyone’s stolen stuff,” Gibson said. “I got back maybe four people’s stuff so far.”
He said he is continuing to try and return some of the stolen items he had found in his car.
The investigation is ongoing and officers are following up on potential leads, according to the press release. Police are asking that if anyone has any information related to the break-ins, to contact the Chico Police Department.
