Republicans tout usage tax on electric cars | The Mighty 790 KFGO

ST. PAUL, Minn. – As a group of Minnesota House Democrats push for a gas tax “holiday” from Memorial Day through Labor Day, some Republicans in the Senate are talking about an electric vehicle tax based on usage.

Sen. Jeff Howe from Rockville in central Minnesota contends it’s not a new tax, but the same thing applied to “a different fuel source.” Howe’s bill would tax utilities for electricity used at charging stations, with the cost presumably passed through to EV drivers.

He also says he doesn’t intend to make the tax any more expensive for electric vehicles than for gas and diesel-powered cars.
